- The Material
SurpRiceâ„¢ is a leather-like material made from rice straw and rice husk, agricultural by-products left after harvest that would otherwise be burned in the field. Through a proprietary, patented process made possible using Italian engineering, this waste is transformed into a durable, design-led material suited to premium accessories, interiors, and product design.
The surface achieves a smooth, slightly matte finish with a subtle natural grain. It is supple and soft to the touch. We offer a range of finishes, from buffed matte to polished semi-gloss as well as grain embossing and surface texturing, giving your design team full aesthetic control.
Physical swatch sets are available upon request.
Unlike conventional PU-coated vegan leathers, SurpRiceâ„¢ does not rely on a thin surface film over a woven base. The structure is thermally bonded, which means it does not peel or delaminate under normal use conditions.
We provide verified performance test data of all essential properties to qualified brand partners under NDA at the specification stage.
Yes. SurpRiceâ„¢ is compatible with standard leather-working processes including folding, creasing, debossing, laser-cutting, hot-stamp foiling, and both machine and hand stitching. No specialist machinery is required.
It also accepts all standard luxury finishing processes: blind embossing, laser engraving, screen printing, digital printing, and metal hardware setting.
- Sustainability
Several things we can state with confidence:
– The primary feedstock is agricultural by-product and no incremental land use is involved.
– Rice is the world’s second most cultivated crop, making our supply chain structurally stable.
– Buying rice straw creates a direct economic incentive for farmers to stop open-field burning, improving air quality in surrounding communities.
– SurpRice™ contains a meaningfully higher bio-based content than conventional PU or PVC leather alternatives.
– The meticulous formulation using nature derived ingredients results in radically lower microplastic generation during use.
A formal third-party Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is currently in progress. We will publish verified environmental data once independent verification is complete.
The bio-based components of SurpRiceâ„¢ are naturally biodegradable under composting conditions.
We do not use terms like “sustainable,” “eco-friendly,” or “100% natural” without verified data behind them.
Rice straw and rice husk are sourced from farming cooperatives in India. Growers receive a direct premium for diverting this material from burning. Processing and finishing take place at our manufacturing facility in Pondicherry, India.

SurpRiceâ„¢ is designed for premium accessories, interiors, and product design, including:

– Interior panels and furnishing trims
– Hospitality and gifting applications
We do not currently position it for high-flex footwear, heavy-duty luggage, or applications requiring sustained water immersion. We will always be direct about what the material does and does not do.
